Speed dating

Venue: Radisson Blu Royal - Rue du Fossé-aux-Loups 47 – 1000 Brussels

Speed dating

The “speed dating” event is an excellent opportunity for first-timers to make professional contacts at the very beginning of the Congress, as well as for regulars to learn new things about their old acquaintances and have a chance to make new AIJA friends. You will have 4 minutes (2 minutes each for you and your partner) to introduce yourself and your company to the person in front of you and then move to the next chair. A facilitator will keep an eye on the time and help you observe the rules.

Welcome Reception

Venue: Saint-Hubert Royal Galleries - 5 Galerie du Roi - 1000 Brussels

Welcome Reception

On Tuesday 28 August, a welcome reception will take place at the Saint-Hubert Royal Galleries, a stone’s throw from the Radisson Blu Royal and the Grand Place. A relaxing opportunity to kick off the Congress and get to know each other.

A bit of history…

Initiated by the architect Jean-Pierre Cluysenaer, the spectacular Galeries Royales project took shape in the 1830's. The works, begun in 1846, were almost completed in time for the official opening on 20 June 1847. The gallery included shops, auditoriums, cafés, restaurants and apartments. Right away perceived as the place to be seen for the fashionable, the Royal Galleries of Saint Hubert drew a wide audience, attracted by its luxury brands, elegant cafés and cultural spaces. These included the Théâtre du Vaudeville, the Cinéma des Galeries and the Taverne du Passage, called the Café des Arts until 1892 and the meeting place for painters and writers of the time. The colony of French refugees, like Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Edgar Quinet and others, would also gather there. The Surrealist painters and artists from the Cobra group were regulars at the venue. A commemorative plaque recalls the first showing of the Lumière brothers’ motion picture camera on 1 March 1896, in the former dispatch room of the Chronique daily newspaper (above Pâtisserie Meert, Galerie du Roi). Nowadays, the Galerie du Roi is home to the best chocolate manufacturers and Belgian brands and honours the greatest men and women of art, history, music, the humanities and science.

Opening Ceremony

Keynote speech: Herman Van Rompuy

Join us as we officially open this year’s International Young Lawyers’ Congress and celebrate culture, history, diversity and unity in the capital of the third most globalised country worldwide, Belgium. The opening ceremony will feature a keynote speech on globalisation given by our distinguished guest, the former President of the European Council and Prime Minister of Belgium Herman Van Rompuy.

This will be followed by a walking dinner where you can immerse yourself in local culinary traditions and tastes from different corners of the globe. Join us for this gastronomic world tour in the company of your international peers. We will then close this amazing evening with great music and dancing in a true AIJA afterparty!

The history of The EGG starts in 1925 when this vast industrial building was built by Danckaert Wood Machines to expand their tight premises. Subsequently, the establishment was bought in 1985 by the company Barama and served as a warehouse for the decors of the renowned Royal Theatre of Monnaie. In the beginning of the 2000s, the building was transformed into a huge complex intended for tele-shopping with television studios, storage facilities and office platforms. In 2009, the Brussels-Capital region purchased it to host the Centre for Cultural Industries, creating unique event spaces welcoming high level international events every year.

Home Hospitality Dinner

Venue: your host’s home

Home Hospitality Dinner

Among the various social events organised during the Congress, the most special and anticipated evening of all is the "Home Hospitality Dinner", where local lawyers open their homes to welcome AIJA members from around the world with delicious, often typical, food and drinks. This is a unique occasion for participants to find out about the hospitality and way of life of the city hosting the Congress in a friendly atmosphere. This Belgian edition is certainly not to be missed!

The Home Hospitality Dinner will be followed by a party gathering both the Congress participants and their wonderful hosts.

NOTE: You will individually receive by e-mail the name of your host and the other guests, as well as instructions how to go to their place. Should you not be able to attend please let the organisers know as soon as possible! Please remember to bring a small gift for your host, which is often in the form of a souvenir from your country. Don’t forget that most of the hosts are not AIJA members and have never attended AIJA events before.

Day out + Get-together dinner & Afterparty

14:00-19:00 / 19:00-02:00

Venue: Bois de la Cambre / Jeux d’Hiver - Chemin du Croquet 1 - 1000 Brussels

Day out

Be ready for a fantastic Day out in Brussels and get surprised by the unexpected green gems hidden in the middle of the city. Join us in Bois de la Cambre, a part of the old Forest of Soignes, to take some fresh air after attending the various scientific sessions and enjoy an entertaining ‘Belgian’ afternoon on the theme of comic strips. As you wend your way through the streets of Brussels, comic strips are everywhere. They are a source of national pride that can be felt particularly in the Belgian capital city because so many authors from Brussels have contributed to the growth in popularity of the ninth art.

Comic strip heroes like challenges, being together and having good time.  In teams, you will participate to fun and interactive missions directly linked to Belgium, its history, its food, its culture and folklore. Belgium will have no more secrets for you. For heroes only!

Right after this unforgettable team building, let’s kick off the evening at the terrace of the Jeux d’Hiver, one of the most famous clubs in town located right on site in the Bois de la Cambre, with an aperitif followed by a barbecue dinner. The resident DJ will then make sure the dance floor gets never emptied.
