What our delegates are saying…

Anouk Rosielle, the Netherlands

In Brussels, I hope to gain insight in different aspects of globalisation and how they influence our clients’ world and our work as lawyers. It is a broad theme and I expect it allows for many interesting discussions on what is a very real aspect of our lives. What better way than to debate this global development than within the setting of quintessentially global AIJA? Apart from that, I hope to see my old friends and meet many new!

About the Congress

Welcome letter of the president

Wiebe de Vries

Dear friends,

Brussels! And the outlook to spend a week together with a great dynamic AIJA crowd of lawyers from all over the world is a valuable project to work for. Over the past years AIJA has showed - no, proved - to me that the combination of knowledge building and personal development are an essential cornerstone of building a successful business as a young lawyer.

Programme Overview

Pre-Congress Seminar

Pre-Congress Seminar

What do you need to be an 'international lawyer'?

Globalisation has changed the way law firms and lawyers operate and the business model they adopt. This has led to a growing need for lawyers with international expertise, specifically lawyers that can work with different business cultures and in more than one jurisdiction.

Today, international lawyers need to be tuned in to the growing global business and the latest trends in the legal services market. While education and skills development are important, there are other factors to consider in their international career. Being an international lawyer also requires having as much international real-life experience and building a network of legal practitioners working in international law fields that are of interest to them. Becoming a member of associations that work internationally or the international section of a national/state bar association can certainly provide them with unique opportunities to boost their international career.

On Tuesday, 28 August 2018 we will explore the abilities and know-how a lawyer should have to be a truly international professional. This pre-Congress Seminar is open to legal professionals seeking to pursue a career internationally or young lawyers aiming at becoming more international in their law firm.

AIJA: the Brussels Annual Congress 2018

Imagine all the people: is the dream of globalisation over? Are we heading towards or away from international integration?

It is a great pleasure for us as Work Coordinators to give you an insight into the scientific programme of the International Young Lawyers’ Congress of AIJA in Brussels 2018. We have been planning the scientific programme in consultation with the commission officers of AIJA at a time of global upheaval and uncertainty. Established patterns of international trade and commerce, and the national and supranational legal rules that underpin them, appear to be under threat from developments around the world. Have the goals of globalisation, free trade and ever closer integration had their day?

“Regional Perspectives on International Standards
of Human Rights”

This prestigious session is organised each year by the AIJA Human Rights Committee and addresses societal challenges for the legal profession. The Voice of the Profession-session of the 2018 Annual Congress will take a closer look at the links between the theories of human rights on the one hand and the evolving practices of human rights in different parts of the world, on the other hand. With human rights specialized speakers, the session will provide an enriched learning experience about the challenges that advocates of the protection of human rights face, and the tools that they have, in respect of the transmission and implementation of international standards of human rights at regional levels.
